Every January, I put together my annual list of Black debut authors—a tradition that started as a small personal challenge and has slowly become one of my favourite projects on Amina’s Bookshelf. Over the years, this list has helped me discover unforgettable new voices from across the diaspora, and it’s become a way for me to celebrate the writers whose first books feel electric with possibility.
For 2026, I decided to take a different approach. Instead of compiling a long list, I’ve narrowed it down to just five debuts. The idea is simple: I want to read every single one, to give each book the time and attention it deserves. This year’s selection leans heavily British, with a strong Nigerian influence running through it—an exciting reflection of the vibrant storytelling coming out of both places right now. It may be a smaller list, but it feels like one of the most promising yet.
